Wishing everyone a joyous and meaningful Janai Purnima 2025!

Janai Purnima holds a special place in the hearts of Nepali people as one of the most respected festivals in the country. This sacred celebration kicks off Nepal's exciting festival season and brings together communities in cultural and religious harmony. For Hindu devotees, this holy day carries deep meaning as they perform the important ritual of tying a protective thread called raksha dhaga around their wrists. People believe this simple yet powerful act cleanses the soul and shields the wearer from harmful spirits and bad energy.

When it comes to spiritual importance, two locations shine brightly during Janai Purnima celebrations. The beautiful Gosaikunda Lake, sitting high at 4,315 meters in Rasuwa District, becomes a gathering place for thousands of pilgrims and shamans who brave the cold to take a sacred bath in its freezing waters. According to ancient stories, Lord Shiva himself created this holy lake, and people say its blessed waters travel 60 kilometers southwest to reach the sacred pool at Kumbheshwar Temple in Patan. Because of this divine connection, Kumbheshwar Temple also comes alive with hundreds of devoted visitors on this special day.

The Kathmandu Valley adds its own flavor to the festivities through the Newar community's celebration of Gunhu Punhi. The star of this celebration is Kwati, a nourishing soup made from nine different types of sprouted beans. Families prepare this special dish by soaking lentils overnight, creating not just a tasty meal but also a healthy one that provides extra nutrition during the rainy monsoon months. This tradition brings families together around the dinner table, creating stronger bonds and shared memories.

Down in the Terai region, Janai Purnima blends beautifully with Rakhi or Rakshya Bandhan, a heartwarming festival that honors the loving relationship between brothers and sisters. Sisters carefully tie holy threads around their brothers' wrists while saying prayers for their safety and happiness. In return, brothers make heartfelt promises to protect and support their sisters throughout their lives.
Far away in the mountain region of Mustang, the Gurung and Thakali communities bring their own exciting twist to the celebration through the Yatung Mela at Muktinath Temple. This lively festival includes delicious feasting, cheerful drinking, and playful games where people actually chase each other while riding mountain ponies, creating a truly unique and joyful atmosphere.

Let us come together to honor this year's festival with true devotion, strong togetherness, and genuine respect for our treasured traditions. May this Janai Purnima 2025 bring blessings, protection, and happiness to all!
