Asian Professional Achievement Award 2026 conferred to HAN President Binayak Shah
For Outstanding Leadership and Contribution to Tourism Development
Kathmandu — Binayak Shah, President of the Hotel Association Nepal (HAN), has been decorated with the Asian Professional Achievement Award 2026 in the Hospitality Leadership category. Amid a special program in Kathmandu Mr. Shah has been awarded Asian Hospitality Leadership Award 2026.
Mr. Shah is a prominent figure in Nepal’s hospitality and tourism industry. His journey from a long career in government service to becoming a leading hotel entrepreneur reflects determination, professional experience, calculated risk-taking and a deep commitment to the growth of Nepal’s tourism sector.
Shah’s professional journey is not simply a story of individual business success. It also mirrors the evolution of Nepal’s hotel and hospitality industry, which has grown into an important pillar of the national economy.
Mr. Binayak Shah served for 16 years at the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies before entering the hotel business in 1992. Leaving the security of government employment to enter the private sector was a major turning point in his career. It required him to take financial and professional risks at a time when Nepal’s hospitality industry was still developing.

Education and Professional Foundation
Shah holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Economics. He also completed a diploma level training in Tourism and Hotel Management from reputed institutions in Europe and Australia.
His academic background in economics, combined with specialized education in tourism and hotel management, has contributed to his broad understanding of business, management and the tourism industry. Over the years, he has developed practical expertise in hotel operations, human resources, service standards, tourism markets and industry policy.
For Shah, success in hospitality is not limited to investment in property and infrastructure. Effective management, trained employees, quality service and an understanding of changing international tourism trends are equally important elements of a successful hotel business.

Building a Career in Hospitality
After leaving government service, Shah began his active involvement in the hotel industry in 1993. His transition from public administration to private enterprise was challenging, but he gradually established himself as an experienced hospitality professional.
One of the major milestones of his business career is associated with The Airport Hotel Kathmandu, located near Tribhuvan International Airport. The hotel has developed as an important hospitality establishment serving international travelers, business visitors and tourism-related clientele. Shah has been associated with the hotel as its operator and Managing Director.
His experience in government administration has also influenced his approach to business, particularly in areas such as organizational discipline, management, coordination and institutional development.

Rising to the Leadership of HAN
Alongside his business career, Shah has played an active role in institutional leadership within Nepal’s hotel industry.
His involvement with the Hotel Association Nepal saw him take on several important responsibilities, including General Secretary, Senior Vice President. In 2023, following the 48th Annual General Meeting of HAN, he was unanimously elected as the association’s 14th President.
Reaching the presidency after years of active involvement in the organization reflects his growing influence within Nepal’s hospitality community.
As President of HAN, Shah has focused not only on the interests of hotel entrepreneurs but also on broader issues affecting Nepal’s tourism economy.

Advocating for a Stronger Tourism Industry
One of Shah’s major areas of concern has been the need to create a more favorable environment for investment and growth in tourism.
He has consistently emphasized the importance of tourism infrastructure, international air connectivity, airport capacity, policy stability and cooperation between the government and private sector. In his view, Nepal has significant potential to attract international visitors, but infrastructure limitations and inadequate connectivity can prevent the country from realizing its full tourism potential.
He has also highlighted the need to make better use of Kathmandu, Pokhara and Bhairahawa airports and to strengthen international air connections. He is constantly promoting Nepalese heritage cuisines on a global scale and contributing for the sound development of wellness tourism in Nepal. Nepal has declared 2027 as the Wellness tourism year.
For Shah, increasing the number of hotels alone is not enough. The growth of hotel capacity must be supported by stronger tourist arrivals, effective international promotion, improved infrastructure and better coordination between public and private stakeholders.

Developing Skilled Human Resources
Another important issue on Shah’s agenda is the shortage of skilled manpower in Nepal’s hospitality sector.
He has emphasized the need to create more opportunities for young people to develop professional skills and build careers within Nepal. The hospitality industry, he believes, can become a significant source of employment if appropriate training and career opportunities are developed.
Under HAN’s initiatives, collaboration has been promoted in areas including vocational training, apprenticeship programs and human-resource development. Such programs aim to connect young people with practical skills and employment opportunities in hotels and tourism.
The emphasis on professional training reflects Shah’s belief that the long-term competitiveness of Nepal’s hospitality industry depends heavily on the quality of its workforce.

Exploring New Tourism Opportunities
Shah has also supported the diversification of Nepal’s tourism products beyond traditional sightseeing.
Areas such as MICE tourism, destination weddings, sports tourism, wellness and medical tourism, food tourism and other specialized tourism segments offer new opportunities for Nepal, particularly as international travelers increasingly seek specialized experiences.
Under HAN’s leadership, discussions and workshops have been organized to explore areas such as MICE wellness tourism and destination weddings, encouraging cooperation between hotels, tourism businesses and other stakeholders.
Shah’s broader vision is to position tourism as an engine of employment, investment, foreign-exchange earnings and local economic development rather than simply focusing on visitor numbers.

Contribution Beyond Hotel Operations
Shah’s involvement extends beyond running a hotel business. He has also been associated with institutions and initiatives related to tourism education, professional training and skills development, including the Nepal Academy of Tourism and Hotel Management (NATHM) and other tourism and vocational-skills structures.
His participation in such initiatives demonstrates his interest in strengthening the professional foundations of Nepal’s hospitality sector.
For an industry that depends heavily on service quality, human resources and professional standards, investment in education and skills remains critical. Shah has consistently placed these issues among the important priorities for the future of tourism.

Looking Ahead
Nepal’s tourism industry stands at an important stage of growth. Hotel investment has increased, new tourism products are emerging and international interest in Nepal remains significant. At the same time, the industry continues to face challenges related to air connectivity, infrastructure, skilled manpower, policy consistency and international market promotion.
Against this backdrop, Shah’s role as a private-sector leader has increasingly involved advocating for stronger cooperation between the government and tourism businesses.
His professional journey—from 16 years in government service to decades in the hotel industry and eventually to the presidency of HAN—demonstrates the value of experience, perseverance and the willingness to take calculated risks.
Recipient of Gorkha Dakshin Bahu, Trishakti Patta and Nepal Bikas Ratna, Binayak Shah is more than a hotel entrepreneur. He represents a generation of hospitality leaders working to connect Nepal’s hotel industry with investment, skills, policy development and international tourism markets.
His journey offers an example of how professional experience, continuous learning and institutional leadership can combine to create lasting impact. As Nepal seeks to build tourism into a stronger foundation of the national economy, the contribution of experienced private-sector leaders such as Shah is likely to remain increasingly important.
